Precision Optical Engineer
Base salary range. Actual offer depends on experience and location. Equity and bonus are additional.
Retroreflectors and laser retroreflector arrays are unforgiving hardware: the physics is settled and the tolerances are not negotiable. You own optical design, fabrication support, and verification for FORGE's precision optics line, from prescription through vacuum qualification.
Responsibilities
- Own optical design and tolerance analysis for retroreflectors and LRA assemblies
- Define alignment, metrology, and acceptance test procedures
- Support fabrication and coating vendors on optical specifications
- Run verification campaigns, including thermal-vacuum optical performance testing
- Document optical performance for customer acceptance
Requirements
- 5+ years precision optics design or test for aerospace or defense hardware
- Hands-on metrology experience: interferometry, autocollimation, or equivalent
- Familiarity with space environmental effects on optical systems
- Eligible for an active U.S. government clearance
What the first year looks like
- A validated optical design, tolerance stack, and test procedure for the retroreflector and LRA line
- Thermal-vacuum optical verification running in-house with repeatable metrology
- First customer acceptance packages delivered with measured performance that matches prediction
Nice to have, not required
- Zemax, CODE V, or equivalent optical design fluency
- Coating specification and optical vendor management experience
- Laser ranging or retroreflector application background
